Taro Nagazumi is a student in Jeremy Brown‘s EFL class. He is played by Robert Lee.
Taro is a Japanese man who works as an executive at the London branch of Bushido Electronics, a Japan-based electronics company. He speaks English quite fluently, but has a habit of adding -o to the end of most words he says (as in “thank-o,” “England-o,” and so on) and always replies “Ah so!” and bows whenever he is called upon. Early in the series, he is at odds with Su-Lee due to Japan and China’s own political differences in the 1970s, but after they make a truce in “Take Your Partners“, he becomes her friend and defends her when she is insulted or threatened. Most of the time he is seen with his camera.
Taro states that he has a black belt in karate when he gets ready to fight Su-Lee, and reveals during a role-play with Mr. Brown that he does his banking at Barclays. He is implied to be a Shintoist, though he swears on the Bible when he goes to court.
Taro’s parents were killed when he was a child, which would likely put him in his 40s or 50s if they died in the Allied bombings during World War II. He has a wife, who he mentions is visiting her parents in Tokyo in “Season 2 Episode 4”.
